Earth Science
Introduction:
"The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking."
It's been a long time since I studied Science and to be honest it's not my best subject. Only this 3rd year college I will study science again and I asked myself, Is it relevant to learn Earth Science for my course which is Fine Arts and Design? Do this subject help me to achieve what I want in my future, I guess so. Actually last week, my professor in Earth Science, Sir Cricencio Paner gave us an assignment. That is to know the significant connection of Earth Science to us, what is Earth Science and the Branches of Earth Science.
At first, I don't know what will I write but then I realize that without the knowledge of Earth Science, we can't appreciate and know the art of nature. After I answered my first question, I researched Earth Science and its branches. Last Thurday, our professor explain and answers our assignment.
Earth Science - it ecompasses all sciences that seek to understand
- Earth
- Earth's Neighbors in space
It includes the Branches in Earth Science:
- Geology- It is the study of Earth.
- Oceanography- It is the study of the Ocean.
- Meteorology- It is the study of the atmosphere and the processes that produce weather.
- Astronomy- It is the study of the Universe.
We also learned the:
Formation of Earth
> Most Researchers conclude that the Planets in Solar System formed at essentially the same time
> Nebular Hypothesis - The Solar System Evolved from an enormous rotating cloud called the Solar Nebula [gas of hydrogen]
Layer form on Earth
>Lighter rocky components floated outward toward the surface
> Gaseous Material escaped from Earth's Interior to produce the promitive atmosphere.
Earth's Major Spheres
>Hydrosphere - The most prominent feature of Hydrosphere is Ocean and It is nearly 71% of Earth Surface and it holds about 97% of Earth's water.
>Atmosphere - One Half lies below 5.6 kilometers [3.5 miles]. It is Thin, tenuous blanket of air.
>Biosphere - It includes all life.
>Geosphere - It is based on compositional differences, it consist of the:
~Crust - The thin, rocky outer layer of Earth
~Mantle - The 2,890 kilometers thick layer of earth located below the crust.
~Core - The innermost layer of Earth.
Source
Plate Tectonics
> Is the history that proposes that Earth's outer shell consists of individual plated that interacts in various ways and thereby produce earthquake, volcanoes, mountains, and Earth's crust itself.
Determinig Location
> Latitude and Longitude are lines on the globe that are used to determine location.
~Latitude - is the distance north or south of the equator measured in degrees.
~Longitude - is the distance east or west of the prime meridian, measured in degrees.
People and the Environment
> Environment - surrounds and influences organisms.
> Resources - includes water, soil, mineral & energy. There's two broad categories:
~Renewable - can be replenished.
~Non Renewable - cannot be replenished in the near future.
> Population - use of minerals/energy has climbed more rapidly than over all growth of population.
> Environmental Problems
After reading this article do you understand more about Earth Science? I hope so. It's fun and exciting to learn the history of our mother earth and how it was made of because this is where we live in and we must know and take care of it. until next time~
